Our roots stretch back to the 1980s. Over the years, the practice has grown through mergers with other established firms, most recently Rae, Reid and Stephen W.S. in 2025. Personal service and straightforward advice remain at the heart of what we do.

Our history
From our beginnings in the 1980s to our most recent merger in 2025, each stage has shaped the firm we are today.
1980s
McNiven & Co founded
Mike McNiven established McNiven & Co as a sole practitioner. Iain Armstrong and Alastair Gray joined the practice in 1985.
1996
Merger with Dickson Smith
The practice merged with Dickson Smith and became Dickson, McNiven and Dunn. Neil Mowat joined the firm, and Gordon Anderson became a partner shortly afterwards.
2002
DMD Law established
The firm adopted the DMD Law name and became a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP).
2019
Merger with Guild & Guild
DMD Law merged with the established firm of Guild & Guild in late 2019.
2025
Merger with Rae, Reid and Stephen W.S.
DMD Law merged with Rae, Reid and Stephen W.S. in 2025, marking the latest chapter in the firm’s development.
